Ray C Doyle – The Pete West Mystery Series

Ray C Doyle writes hard-hitting political stories that resonate with the truth that lies beneath daily headlines. Political corruption and industrial espionage are rife today. Ray’s exceptional talent with words takes these headlines and upgrades them into a fiction of the highest quality.

Ray’s main character, Pete West, lies somewhere between the noir world of Chandler’s Philip Marlowe and the enforced moral principles in a corrupt political world found in Lee Child’s Jack Reacher series.

These classic tropes come together to produce a new and exciting character-driven trilogy of hard-boiled, noir novels in the world of Pete West.

A bright searchlight at the top of the cliff cut through the night, illuminating the boat and all around it.

“This is the British Army… Stay where you are… Lay down your arms and walk towards the light.” The megaphone voice repeated the order.

“On top of the cliff,” shouted Andrea. “The bastards are hidden. Get the light!” He raised his pistol and aimed at the top of the cliffs. A hail of bullets hit the searchlight, but the beach figures still stood out clearly in the moonlight. Both sides fired as Andreas’s men tried in vain to find shelter among the few scattered rocks. Tracers from the chattering automatic weapons on the clifftop bounced around, throwing up the shingle. Running men fell screaming, cut down in a hail of bullets sweeping across the beach. Return fire from the beach ricocheted harmlessly off the boulders and cliff top. Within a minute, there was hand-to-hand fighting as soldiers ran out into the open from the two paths on either side of the cove.

Alexander dropped to the ground next to Andreas as a bullet kicked up stones beside him. “We can only swim out from here. We’re trapped.” Alexander grabbed Andreas. “Come on. You can’t do anything for the men now. For God’s sake, Andreas, move!”

The launch that landed the men beached itself, engine running. Two lifeless figures lay slumped in the after well. What remained of the forward cabin was riddled with bullets. Splintered wood lay everywhere. Alexander ran to the boat. Occasional bursts of automatic gunfire still shattered the night as a handful of men held the enemy fire on the beach. Another searchlight lit the entire area, and the men fell back across the beach.

“Quick, Andreas.”

Alexander clambered up onto the boat and turned. Grabbing Andreas by his arm, he hauled him up and over the gunwale. A single shot rang out, and Andreas slumped across the bow. A photo dropped from his jacket pocket. Caught by the breeze, it fell into the water. The launch moved away from the beach, turned, and motored into the night with a sudden burst of power.

Several minutes later, a British officer walking among the casualties at the water’s edge stopped to pick up the photograph as it danced in the ebb and flow of lapping water. He examined it by the light of his flashlight before tucking it into his pocket.
